Hang it once, hang it right

One canvas, one hanger, about five minutes. The three rules galleries use, four steps, and the fastener that suits your wall.

The eye-level rule

Center the piece 57 to 60 inches from the floor, roughly eye level for a standing adult. It works on a bare wall and above furniture alike.

The furniture rule

Above a sofa, console or headboard, leave 6 to 8 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the piece.

The width rule

A piece about two thirds to three quarters the width of the furniture below balances the wall. Try sizes on the size chart.

02Four steps

Five minutes, four steps

You need a tape measure, a pencil, a level, the fastener that matches your wall, and a hammer or screwdriver to suit it.

  1. Mark the height

    Measure up from the floor to where the center should land, usually 57 to 60 inches, and mark it lightly in pencil.

  2. Find the hanging point

    Turn the piece over and measure from its top edge to the hanger or wire. Subtract that from your mark: that is where the fastener goes.

  3. Set the fastener

    Keep it straight with a level and fit the fastener that suits your wall. Give it a firm tug before you let go.

  4. Hang and check

    Lift the piece onto the fastener and check it with the level from a few steps back, where you will actually see it.

How high should I hang my canvas?

Center it 57 to 60 inches from the floor for most rooms. Above furniture, keep 6 to 8 inches between the furniture and the bottom edge, and let that spacing move the height a little if the eye-level mark would sit too close.

Do I need a stud?

No. Most sizes hang comfortably on a single wall anchor rated for their weight. A stud is the strongest option where one lines up, but it is not required.

How do I know what hardware is on the back?

Turn the piece over before you choose a fastener: look for a hanger or a wire, and match the fastener to what you find there and to your wall.

Can I hang it without making a hole?

Yes, with a rated adhesive picture-hanging strip sized to the weight. Check the strip's own rating against your size before relying on it.
